Another Smoothie Cleanse

What you are NOT about to read is another story regarding someone’s experience of “dieting” (starving) themselves in order to shed a few pounds. What you are about to read, is a story of someone who wanted to reset their body and think twice before putting anything in it. As a disclaimer, this is my second time doing this cleanse and if you plan on reading my experience from beginning to end, I encourage you to view this process as a 10 day reboot. You know when an iPhone starts to glitch and you need to hold down the home screen and lock button to fix it? It takes about 5 seconds right? Well, unfortunately, weight loss doesn’t happen the same way – but a cleanse mimics the same process-. All and all, please, keep an open mind.

The particular cleanse that I’m mentioning in this post is called “The 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse” by JJ Smith. Her book can be found on Amazon for $9. It includes the benefits of green smoothies, the names of multiple greens and why they are good for you, various women’s testimonies, and as a bonus* a variety of different smoothies – related and unrelated to the cleanse- to try in the future.

What’s the purpose of a green smoothie cleanse? According to JJ, cleansing the body rids it of toxins. Although our bodies can naturally detoxify themselves, when there is an excess amount, our bodies work harder to detoxify, which means burning fat isn’t on the top of the priority list. So, it makes sense that when our bodies are clean we experience better digestion, little to no bloating, and we can burn fat a little easier.

Did you drink the same smoothie everyday?

I did not. Depending on which cleanse you do – full or modified- you will drink 2-3 smoothies a day. Although the greens consisted of spinach, kale, and spring mix, the fruit combinations changed daily. *If you choose to do the full cleanse, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you will drink a smoothie. If you choose to do the modified cleanse, you will drink two smoothies a day and are allowed one, clean, healthy meal. So choose your meal wisely.

What was the texture of the smoothy? Did they taste like vegetables? Were they good?

For those of you who are texture picky, I’m sorry, but they are chunky. You can add more water to loosen them up (and if you have a good blender, everything should blend nicely). However, they are meant to be slightly chunky because it will cause you to chew the smoothie. One reason we experience bloating is because we don’t chew our food enough which allows for chunks to sit in our stomachs before digesting -can you understand why this causes bloating?-  If you can get over the idea of chewing a liquid, it’s not bad. It’s definitely something you get used to. In terms of the smoothie’s taste, they taste mainly like fruit. However, since most of the fruit required is frozen, they come unsweetened. You can add stevia to your smoothies to give them a better taste. Trust me, it helps. *Personally, I’m not a fan of spring mix (being blended alone) so any smoothie who’s ONLY GREEN was spring mix wasn’t my favorite.

  • 2 handfuls of kale
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 apples, cored, quartered
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen peaches
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen mixed berries
  • 2 packets stevia
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseeds

Okay, so what can you eat?

You can snack on crunchy vegetables, apples, boiled eggs, unsalted/unsweetened nuts and natural peanut butter. *As a peanut butter LOVER I was highly disappointed in the taste and texture of natural peanut butter. I WILL NOT BE REPURCHASING. However, for 10 days, I snacked on:

  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • A peanut medley consisting of unsalted peanuts, almonds and unsalted sunflower-seeds
  • * As a bonus I added in unsalted kale chips

Not the most appetizing, but you do what you have to.

How much does this cost?

As you can imagine, eating clean cost more. However, where you shop can help. I purchased most of the grocery list from Aldi, but I did end up going to Meijer for certain fruit. JJ splits the shopping list in half, so you go to the store twice.

Food for the First Five Days

  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Peaches
  • Frozen Blueberries
  • Frozen Strawberries
  • Frozen mixed berries
  • Mango chunks
  • Bananas
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Spring Mix
  • Stevia
  • Bag of ground flaxseeds
  • Fruit/veggies of your choice to snack on
  • *Optional: raw or unsalted nuts/seeds
  • *Optional: detox tea (by Triple Leaf or Yogi brands)
  • *Optional: non-dairy/plant based protein powder

Food for the Last Five Days

  • Mango chunks
  • Frozen peaches
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Frozen mixed berries
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen strawberries
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Spring Mix
  • Fruit/veggies of your choice to snack on
  • *Optional: raw or unsalted nuts/seeds

It’s a lot. However, if this is any encouragement, I purchased majority of BOTH shopping lists from Aldi for $38 in one trip. I did not purchase the detox tea nor the protein powder and I currently owned flaxseeds and stevia. Had I not owned ANYTHING and I needed to purchase it all, I would say at Aldi, it would average $80-$100 for the entire 10 days. Keep in mind that Aldi does not always carry name brand. So once again, PICK WHERE/HOW YOU SHOP WISELY. Over the course of 10 days I did have to go back to the store, but only for certain fruit that Aldi did not carry. *Tip: If you buy a 10-20 oz of each green, you will not need to purchase anymore. You’re welcome

Did you see any results/lose weight?

Yes. The first time I did this cleanse – back in June 2015- I lost 12 lbs. Recently, I lost 4 lbs. You may be thinking, “that’s not a lot”, and you’re right. However, back in 2015, clearly, I had a lot of toxins in my body and therefore, I lost more weight. I have also gained some muscle over the course of 2 years, and my body is not getting rid of it as easily.

By doing the modified cleanse, you are supposed to shed anywhere from 5-10 lbs and by doing the full cleanse you’re supposed to shed anywhere from 10-15 lbs. *Remember, everyone’s body is different. Some will loose more and some will loose less. Also, it’s important to not get caught up in the number. What’s important is to notice the difference in the way you feel and look. Although I only lost 4 lbs, I can feel the difference, and I do feel much lighter. *To see me before and after, watch my video below.
